Sightseeing Opportunities Near the Reunion
Built
mainly during the latter half of the 1800's, these were the opulent
"cottages" of America's rich and famous. There are 10 of them, and each
takes an hour or two to tour. You can tour 5 of them for $31, which is
about all you can take in a day. Little kids won't be interested. If
you like architecture, history, antiques, or decadent
wealth-flaunting, you have to see these. If you just want to see
the exteriors, you can see some for free on the Cliff Walk, below.
Purgatory Chasm
Maps & InfoPurgatory Chasm is a 30 minute drive north of Providence. It's a nice hike out in the country,
or if you go down in the chasm, it's a strenuous 1/2 KM climb through huge jagged boulders.
And they mean it.
But MM made it.
The Cliff Walk
For cliff walk maps, history and information, go
here. The cliff walk is a 5 KM hiking trail along the coastline which goes past the giant mansions of Newport.
And a few wierd ones.
MM made it through the rough spots here, too.
Mystic Seaport
is an all-day activity for the whole family. Well, it's better if they like history.
It's a museum about the fishing and whaling industry that flourished in Connecticut for a few hundred years.
Maps and info
here.
Other cool stuff to see
Narragansett pier, on the west side of the bay, was a casino in the 1890's.
Lighthouses, all over the place
